SAMHSA has issued a new introductory guide: Navigating Mental Health and Substance Use Care: An Introductory Guide for Families. Families often face complex, confusing, and emotionally demanding challenges when supporting a loved one with mental health, substance use, or co-occurring conditions, yet many are unsure where to find information, resources, and support.  This SAMHSA publication provides practical guidance to help families understand behavioral health systems, access resources, and support a loved one across different life stages and circumstances. It also highlights strategies for family wellness, peer support, advocacy, crisis preparedness, and recovery, reinforcing that families do not have to navigate these challenges alone.  Download the guide.

Eastern Maine Development Corporation recently received the contract to provide navigator services for the DHHS HOPE/PAS program and reached out to recruit for a Washington County-based position. Read Alex Gayton’s article in Cooperative Extension’s Food & Health Blog, “Stainless Steel vs. Cast Iron: My Journey to Finding a PFAS-Free Egg Pan:” If you’ve ever tried to swap your nonstick pans for a PFAS-free alternative, you know it’s not just a kitchen upgrade, it’s a journey. For me, this experiment was driven by one goal: finding a safe PFAS-free pan that I can realistically cook in. This pan review is based on my own experience, specifically with cooking eggs. I have fried eggs or scrambled eggs almost every morning, so this is an important pan swap I need to be confident in. Read article.

On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Governor Janet Mills announced the release of Maine’s 2026 Elder Justice Roadmap and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to preventing elder abuse. The proclamation highlights the importance of community connection, supportive services, and coordinated action in helping older adults live safely and with dignity.  The Elder Abuse Institute of Maine and their Elder Service Connections program was featured in the Roadmap as a key statewide success story. What began as a pilot partnership with Adult Protective Services has grown into a permanently funded, statewide program that provides ongoing, community-based advocacy and support to older adults across Maine. This recognition reflects the impact of person-led, relationship-based support in strengthening safety, autonomy, and long-term well-being.  Read more here.
