Basics of Greenhouse Technology

April 10 in Machias:  The beginner-friendly Basics of Greenhouse Technology workshops are designed for farmers, commercial growers, homesteaders, hobby growers and others interested in greenhouse production. Participants will learn about greenhouse structures and materials; heating, cooling and ventilation systems; basic automation and environmental controls; and common challenges with practical solutions for small- and mid-size farms. The sessions are led by Ankit K Singh, assistant Extension professor, sustainable agriculture and ornamental horticulture educator with University of Maine. The cost to attend ranges from $0–15. Shape Maine’s Future

Monday, April 13th, 3 – 5 pm at the MaineStreet Business Building, Machias: MaineSpark, Educate Maine, and MDF invite you to join us for a special focus group session as we work together to shape the future of Maine’s education and workforce development efforts. This month, MaineSpark is partnering with Sunrise County Economic Council, Washington County Community College, and The Community Caring Collaborative to bring these discussions to our local region (see flyer).  Your insights and expertise are critical as we look ahead to the next decade of MaineSpark’s work. Our hope is that we can support the efforts happening locally to help more students and adults access and complete training. You’ll also get to hear from local partners about the existing programs that are helping more people thrive in the region.

April 25th, 9 am — 12 Noon, Ellsworth: Healthy Acadia invites community members of all ages and abilities to take part in 2026 World Tai Chi & Qigong Day: One World…One Breath, on Saturday, April 25, at our office located at 77 Beechland Road in Ellsworth.  Learn more.


Summer Camp Offers Opportunities to Students in Washington County

Maine Seacoast Mission has opened registration for its 2026 EdGE summer camp. Camp opportunities are offered at three locations across Downeast Maine in Addison, Machias, and Milbridge for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. EdGE Summer Camp provides children with fun, safe, and social peer experiences, while also helping parents and guardians maintain routine work schedules.  Students work on skills that they learn during the school year and also have a lot of fun. Parents can register their child for as many weeks as they wish or on a week-by-week basis. At camp, kids rotate through a variety of activities during the day including STEM, arts and crafts, and physical activities. Over the summer, campers go on field trips and have multiple opportunities to visit the Mission’s challenge course on the Downeast Campus in Cherryfield.  Families can enroll their children online. Celebrating the Journey — HOPE Conference 2026

May 13th at the Augusta Civic Center: Registration is open for The HOPE Conference, a Statewide Recovery/Wellness Conference for persons in recovery from substance use and mental health challenges and Service Providers. It was created to help participants gain a greater understanding of what recovery wellness looks like from the many paths and different perspectives on the journey of life. View the brochure and register.


First Time Home Buyer Course

May 30th, 8 am — 5 pm, UMaine Machias, Torrey Hall, Room 104: Learn everything you need to know about the home buying process at a hoMEworks First Time Home Buyer course.  Completing this course could make you eligible for the $5,000 Maine State Housing Advantage Grant to apply towards closing costs.  This course also satisfies the a requirement for First-Time Home Buyer course completion when applying to The Joy Fund.  See flyer for details.


Strengthening Youth Defense Project Listening Session
The Strengthening Youth Defense Project, a Project of the Maine Commission on Public Defense Services, is looking for youth/families who have experienced Maine’s Juvenile Court System and would be willing to share about your experiences and ideas for change. This opportunity does offer a stipend for participation. The project will track and analyze court and related system data, best practices, and information from youth and system professionals in order to evaluate the youth defense system in Maine. The project will identify areas for improvement; provide training to youth defenders; and make recommendations for revisions to standards of practice for youth defenders, system changes, and the potential establishment of Maine’s first youth defense public defender office. See flyer for details.
