CCC Vision Day 2019

Last week the CCC convened partners from all levels of the collaborative for a day of visioning how Washington County would look if all childcare needs were met.  Cobscook Community Learning Center hosted the event in their beautiful new space adjacent to the Commons, and Angie Garrison of Angie’s Everything Nice bakery provided delicious morning and lunch refreshments.  The day opened with a panel of 3 parents (Jessica Page, Savannah Steiger and Megan Harnois) who gave us the inside scoop on the challenges of finding and scheduling childcare into their families’ lives.  We heard from families, employers of parents, childcare providers and other stakeholders about the complexities of childcare; held lively discussions on ideas, approaches and models to address some of the issues including how the community at large could respond; and broke into small groups to dig deeper into the 5 major avenues of approaching childcare.  It was an inspiring, eye-opening day yielding tangible paths for CCC to pursue with partners.

Starting Over: Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
January 21, 2020

Join the Tri-State Learning Collaborative on Aging on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 from 12:00-1:30 for a  webinar discussion of grandparents raising grandchildren. In the United States, more than three million children are being raised by their grandparents or other relatives. When grandparents assume this responsibility, they often take on added financial and legal responsibilities with little outside assistance. About 25% of those kinship families are in rural areas where it can be even more challenging to find needed resources and supports than it is in large cities. During this webinar, we will hear how age-friendly organizations in northern New England are supporting grand-families and helping to meet the economic, social, and health needs of grandparents who are raising their grandchildren.  Presenter: Jennifer Crittenden, Assistant Director, UMaine Center on Aging.  Register here.

Healthy Acadia Hiring for 3 Positions:

Healthy Acadia has the following opportunities available to join a dynamic team passionate about making it easier for all people to lead healthier lives:

Caregiver Survey

The Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine is helping the State of Maine with its needs assessment as part of Maine’s State Plan on Aging under the Older Americans Act. As part of that, an on-line caregiver survey is being conducted.  Maine wants to improve services that support older adults to live in our homes and in our communities as long as possible. As part of this, Maine wants to hear from you if you provide any kind of help or care to an older adult or an adult with a disability or if you are an older person who has primary responsibility for the care of a grandchild or other relative under the age of 18. This includes unpaid caregivers as well as caregivers who are paid to provide help to a relative or friend.  This statewide survey is being conducted by the Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine (USM) on behalf of Maine’s Office of Aging and Disability Services (OADS). While the survey is voluntary, the findings will help the State and its community partners focus on the areas that are of greatest concern to you and other caregivers in Maine. Information about this survey, including a link to the survey, is also on the OADS’ website. Please feel free to share this survey with other people or organizations who might be interested. Thank you!

Keep Active this Winter: Healthy Tips from Maine SNAP-Ed

From Healthy Acadia’s e-newsletter:
Along with eating healthy, physical activity is key to living a healthy, balanced life. Shorter days and colder weather can make exercise a challenge, so here are some ideas to stay moving this winter:

Fun Indoor Activities:
1.  Play twister, jump rope, or hula hoop.
2.  Turn on your favorite music and have a dance party!
3.  Stretch out with a free online yoga video.
4.  Exercise your brain by doing a puzzle or playing chess or
checkers.

Lively Outdoor Options:
1. Go sledding. Walking back up that hill is great for your lungs
and heart!
2. Shovel the driveway. Shoveling builds strong arm, leg, and
back muscles. Snow can be heavy – remember to lift safely!
3. Build a snow fort or snowman with your family or friends.
4. Find a local frozen pond and strap on some ice skates.

Healthy Eating:
Are you interested in learning how to prepare healthy meals for your family that taste great, fit your budget, and your busy schedule? SNAP-Ed Nutrition Educator Jada Wensman will offer “Cooking Matters for Families” on Tuesdays, from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, beginning January 7 and continuing through February 11, 2020, at the Bucksport Regional Health Center. “Cooking Matters for Families” is a FREE cooking and nutrition class for families with kids ages 5-12. Explore new foods, learn tips to make the healthy choice the easy choice, and practice skills to prepare tasty, low-cost meals together at home.  Space is limited. Email Jada or call (207) 667-7171 or to register.
