May StoryWalk® in Machias

This May, Porter Memorial Library’s StoryWalk® will feature Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt, by Kate Messner. In this charming and engaging story, young readers journey through the hidden wonders of a garden across the seasons.  Learn more here.


Creative Community Conversations

Sunrise County Economic Council & Cultural Alliance of Maine are presenting a series of community conversations on the cultural and creative economy in Downeast Maine in June from 5 – 6:30 pm at different locations in Washington County.  Download a flyer with the schedule.


Juneteenth Commemoration

The fifth annual Juneteenth Downeast Commemoration will return to Knowlton Park, 11 Shore Road, Ellsworth, Maine, on Thursday, June 19, from 4 to 7 pm. This free festival invites all Mainers and visitors to participate in Juneteenth for a day filled with Black and Indigenous music, culture, food, and activities for all ages. The overarching theme for this year’s event is: Caring for each other, as we care for ourselves. Stay tuned for details!


OWLette Summer Camp

June 23-26 at Milbridge Commons Wellness Park: This day camp for girls aged 11 to 14 is offered by Women for Healthy Rural Living in collaboration with Maine Outdoor School. Campers learn outdoor skills in an inclusive, non-competitive environment. Learn more and register.


Maine Child Welfare Education Annual Conference

Registration is now open for the 30th Maine Child Welfare Education conference on June 26th: Adolescents Under Pressure: Surviving and Thriving in a Changing World.  Various types of continuing education credits have been approved or are pending approval. This year’s content will be focused on various issues impacting adolescents and the program will be held at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.  See conference brochure for agenda and info on speakers, breakout sessions, and registration.  The deadline to register is June 13th.


Queerly ME Workshop

Monday June 30th, 10 am — 12 Noon at Cobscook Institute: Cultivating Community – The Power of Gathering Spaces & The Impact of Belonging.  In this talk, explore the three components of community building Queerly ME employs to foster strong support networks and strengthen community belonging for LGBTQIA+ adults in Maine. Drive into what is needed for a gathering place to thrive and lead towards meaningful, long-lasting community connections.  This workshop will have a strong focus on the LGBTQIA+ community in Maine, and the many sociopolitical obstacles challenging the creation and growth of gathering spaces and how we may overcome those challenges through collective action.  CLICK HERE to register at Queerly ME.


Down East Teen Leadership Camp

Healthy Acadia is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 2025 Down East Teen Leadership Camp (DETLC), a five-day, overnight summer experience designed to empower youth entering grades 7-9 in the fall through leadership development, team-building, and unforgettable camp fun. This year’s Camp will be held July 21-25, 2025, on the beautiful campus of Cobscook Institute in Trescott.  Read the full press release to learn more.


In Full Bloom–a Children’s Art Camp

July 21-25 from 10 am to Noon at Milbridge Commons Wellness Park: Women for Healthy Rural Living will offer this camp for children aged 9-14. Along with artist Janie Snider, participants will create a beautiful flower garden mural on the wooden fence at Milbridge Commons. Students will explore various types of flowers, learn about colors and painting techniques, and work together to bring this mural to life. Learn more and register.
